Total time:
Serves: 4 servings
- 2 tsp olive oil, divided use
- 1 lb. ground lean turkey
- ¾ cup chopped onion
- ¾ cup chopped red bell pepper
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped or pressed
- 2 cups all natural tomato sauce, no salt or sugar added
- 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1½ tsp hot pepper sauce (optional, I didn't use with the kids)
- 1 Tbsp. pure maple syrup
- ½ tsp Himalayan salt
- ¼ tsp ground black pepper
- 4 slices of whole grain sprouted bread (Ezekiel is a great choice)
- Chopped fresh parsley for an optional topping
- Heat 1 tsp of oil in a large sauce pan
- Add your ground turkey and cook until no longer pink. It took mine 8 minutes.
- Remove cooked turkey to a bowl.
- Eat remaining 1 tsp of oil and add in your onion and bell pepper. Sauté until onion is translucent. About 4 minutes.
- Then add in your pressed garlic and stir for a minute.
- Add in your tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, maple syrup, salt and pepper, and cooked turkey and mix well.
- Reduce the heat to a simmer and stir occasionally for 15-20 minutes or until it has thickened.
- One slice of bread with 1 cup sloppy joes will give you a serving size of 1 Green, 1 Red, 1 Yellow and 1 tsp for your Portion Fix nutrition plan.
- Sprinkle with your fresh chopped parsley if you desire. Enjoy!
