Homemade Elderberry Syrup

December 1, 2017 by Melissa Leave a Comment

Who has heard of elderberry syrup? I kept reading about how good it was for boosting your immune system and how it can shorten the length of a cold by 3 days. I started to buy it at my local health food store a few years ago and would take it and give it to the girls if they were feeling sick. I felt like it really helped. It was expensive though!!

I started to look around to see if I could make it to save money. In 2014 I started making my own batch by buying dried elderberries from Frontier off of Amazon. Feel free to use my Amazon Affiliate link HERE to purchase your own bag of organic elderberries, so you can start making it yourself! ๐Ÿ™‚ It is actually really easy to make and makes a big batch. ย Here is the recipe I got from the comments section by Lisa Kearns on Amazon.

**If you have any concerns ask your doctor, I am not an expert and just found this recipe on the internet to make for my family and wanted to share. I have noticed a difference with it helping us avoid and get over colds quicker.

Elderberry Syrup

1 cup dried elderberries
4 cups water
1/2 – 1 cup raw honey (I buys mine from a local organic grocery store.)

*Remember Infants cannot have raw honey in their diet.

Bring the dried elderberries and water to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30-45 minutes or until water has been reduced by 1/2. Strain the juice, squishing the berries in the strainer with a spoon to remove all the juice, then let it cool completely before adding the honey. You will loose the benefits of the local honey if you mix it in when it is still hot. Once cool, stir to mix the honey in. Store syrup in the fridge. I have it in a glass mason jar. Each batch makes 2-3 cups of elderberry syrup. You can take a tablespoon daily to prevent illness, and if you’re already sick take a teaspoon of it 4 times throughout the day.

Check out Live Strong and their article talking more about the benefits from elderberry syrup.
