My mom was visiting and made this green apple smoothie. The kids drank it up and asked for seconds! I loved the flavor as well and it has since been a staple in our house. We change the original recipe up from time to time depending what we have on hand. Here are a few different variations and items we add in.
The original recipe came from Nourished The Blog. She calls for baby spinach, unsweetened plain almond milk, frozen banana, frozen pineapple (mango or peaches), a granny smith apple, lemon juice, honey, and ice cubes. She then had optionals like chia seeds, hemp seeds and flax seeds.
When I did not have some items or other items were in season, I would substitute. So for spinach we have used kale. The kids did not notice a difference in the flavor. For almond milk we use coconut milk, a favorite in our house. I seem to never have a frozen banana on hand just a room temperature one. HAHA! We also never have frozen pineapple, so we have used extra granny smith apples, bananas or our new favorite is frozen strawberries!! YUM! We always add the chia seeds and flax seeds.
I have read to ground your flax seeds prior because it is absorbed better by the body. If you have an awesome blender like mine, then it will blend those seeds pretty well so you don’t have to worry about that extra step. I have also added spirulina powder too when I have it on hand for extra veggie goodness! Look at that beautiful green color!!!
I even make a bigger batch to freeze this green smoothies in popsicle molds! They are great for a cool and healthy snack after a hot summer afternoon playing outside. Enjoy and stay happy and healthy!
To stressing less and playing more,
Melissa 🙂
