This is a great idea anytime but with us quarantined at home currently, this is a fun idea to get kids and adults out of the house walking and learning about different animals. I got the idea from a friend that posted her neighborhood doing it. I then threw the idea out to my own neighborhood and people were interested! YAY! With a friends help we got fliers passed out a week prior. A last minute reminder on our neighborhood Facebook page the night prior helped those of use, myself included, that forgot about it. 😛 Here is what our flier said.

Neighborhood Zoo Walk
Sunday May 3rd
11 AM – DUSK
(rain date – Sunday, May 17th)
Let’s spread some sunshine for the amazing kiddos and enjoy the outdoors with a ZOO WALK!
Participation is easy…
- Choose an animal (or 5!) and place it in your front yard – close to the sidewalk so we aren’t invading your space.
- Write up 5 (or more) interesting facts about the animal you’ve chosen.
- Where it lives.
- What it likes to eat, etc.
- Keep it simple or jazz it up, that is up to you!
If you have any questions please reach out. This is NOT meant to be stressful, but something FUN in the midst of all this craziness!

Here are our pictures from our Zoo Walk! My three kids picked the Lions, Tigers and Bears Oh My Exhibits! Then added in their whale sharks and fox snakes last minute. We used our dog kennel that was in storage for the lions and our camping screened in tent for a bear cage. The tigers were on my husbands drive up car ramps for a rock they were laying on. The whale sharks are in the kiddy pool we have for our dog with a tarp in it. The snakes got a green blanket for the ground. The kids were very careful about keeping their stuffed animals clean and had some water for each animal in their exhibit. 🙂 It was fun to see the creativity throughout everyones yard exhibits! We saw drawings, hand made crafts, chalk walk art and even cardboard cutouts! Enjoy and I hope you can get one started in your neighborhood!!
My three kids asked to be in the cage as three black bear cubs! They roared at people as they came by and even had me feed them beans and rice in bowls to eat for lunch (pictures at the end).
Love the creativity with the Christmas decorations for a reindeer exhibit!
Here are pictures of me making food for my three black bear cubs (leftover refried beans and Mexican rice). They wanted it to look like animal food. HAHA! They stayed in full character and ate only with their mouths! HAHA!
We had so much fun walking around and seeing neighbors out. Of course we kept our social distancing of 6 feet but it was nice to have some conversations, learn some fun new facts about animals and have a walk with the family. 🙂 I would recommend this for any neighborhood! We had a blast!
To stressing less and playing more,
Melissa 🙂
