Road Trip Snacks! We do not live close to family, so we find ourselves traveling a lot in the car. Most trips are around 10 hours long and I like to just get to our destination. Stopping for food breaks isn’t my thing, so I make snack bags and enough food to last for the whole trip.
I feel like I have created a pretty good system that works well with my three kids while we are driving. I make snack bags each child has next to their seat and then individual cold snack bags in a cooler near me, that is easy to hand or throw back. They know that once they are done with their snack bags there is no more food for them. I give them Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner foods separate, so they pretty much have their own freedom to chose what they want from their bags. It works really well and they enjoy having a choice. As a mom, I am happy because everything I give them is in moderation and very balanced across the food groups. They have their own water bottle we refill during the trip but they do get a special juice or coconut water during the trip as a special treat!
Breakfast on the road is normally a pre made muffin or hard boiled eggs from their cooler bag and a fruit from their snack bag.
Lunch on the road is a pre-made sandwich or some chicken strips I heat up that morning and wrap in tinfoil. Then snack bag items add to it to make a complete meal.
Dinner on the road normally doesn’t happen for us since we travel and arrive at dinner time. That meal we would go out and eat from either Chipotle, Panera or Chick fi la. Those you can order ahead and pick up or drive through, so it doesn’t take much time from your trip.
Here is an example of what I put in their snack bag that will be near their seat.
Next to Seat Bag:
- Juice (Honest Kids)
- Rice cake/Popcorn
- seaweed snack
- veggie chips
- lara bar/kind bar/cliff kids bar (I love RX Bar’s for myself)
- fruit- orange/banana/watermelon/dried fruit
- apple sauce unsweetened
- nuts-cashews/almonds OR Trail Mix
- turkey jerky
Here is an example of a snack bag that will be in the cooler.
Cooler Bag:
- Apples/strawberries
- cheese, sliced (I like raw cheddar cheese)
- carrots and guacamole
- sliced whole turkey (no deli meat)
- hard boiled eggs
- kefir yogurt drink smoothie or yogurt sticks frozen
- snap peas/ sliced cucumbers
- coconut water
TIP with Freezing your Yogurt!
This is a great cold snack for the kids on a hot day but also great for a road trip with something frozen keeping other items in the cooler cold until needed. Just put the whole box if you want into the freezer to freeze. I do it the day before I need them. Then you eat them like a frozen pop!
I hope this post helped you get some ideas for your next road trip!! Buckle up and have fun!!
