Turkey Sloppy Joe’s (FIXATE)

February 27, 2018 by Melissa Leave a Comment

My husband and I both grew up on the famous sloppy joe dinners. I have tried making it healthier by going extreme with a sloppy lentil recipe but I tried this one the other day and it was delicious! You get a complete meal but feel like you are having a comfort food! I got this from the FIXATE cooking show on my fitness app BOD. The link will take you to the cookbook to find many more healthy recipes like this one using the fun color portion containers to keep it all portioned out too! If you are interested in learning more about the BOD fitness app please message me so we can start talking about your goals!

The kids and I love trying new recipes out to see if they will become staples in our house. This one has been added to that list and that is why it is now on the blog!

Begin by heating up your 1 tsp of oil in a large skillet. Add in your pound of lean ground turkey and cook until the turkey is no longer pink. It took me about 8 minutes to cook my 1 pound of turkey.

I then moved it into a bowl and heated up another 1 tsp of olive oil to then cook my chopped onion (3/4 cup) and bell pepper (3/4 cup). Took about 4 minutes for my onion to become translucent. Now add in your pressed or chopped garlic (2 cloves) and stir for 1 minute to get that amazing flavor out of it.

Next, you will add in your tomato sauce (2 cups), Worcestershire sauce (1 Tbsp), hot pepper sauce if using ( 1 1/2 tsp), and maple syrup (1 Tbsp). A great alternative to the regular brown sugar most recipes use. Season with your salt (1/2 tsp) and pepper (1/4 tsp) while stirring.

Then you will add in your cooked turkey and mix well. Reduce the heat to keep it at a simmer, stirring occasionally for about 15-20 minutes, or when sauce has thickened.

I bought tiny buns, so two equaled a yellow container but the recipe does call for 1 slice of bread per serving if you want it to equal 1 yellow container. They recommended Ezekiel bread. A serving is 1 cup of the sloppy joe mixture with your slice of bread. All equals out to 1 Green, 1 Red, 1 Yellow and 1 tsp. This works great for my meals in the 80 Day Obsession Program. You can even sprinkle some chopped fresh parsley for a added garnish on top. I didn’t have any, but think it would have looked great!

Author: FIXATE
Recipe type: Dinner
Serves: 4 servings
Ingredients
  • 2 tsp olive oil, divided use
  • 1 lb. ground lean turkey
  • ¾ cup chopped onion
  • ¾ cup chopped red bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped or pressed
  • 2 cups all natural tomato sauce, no salt or sugar added
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1½ tsp hot pepper sauce (optional, I didn't use with the kids)
  • 1 Tbsp. pure maple syrup
  • ½ tsp Himalayan salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 4 slices of whole grain sprouted bread (Ezekiel is a great choice)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for an optional topping
Instructions
  1. Heat 1 tsp of oil in a large sauce pan
  2. Add your ground turkey and cook until no longer pink. It took mine 8 minutes.
  3. Remove cooked turkey to a bowl.
  4. Eat remaining 1 tsp of oil and add in your onion and bell pepper. Sauté until onion is translucent. About 4 minutes.
  5. Then add in your pressed garlic and stir for a minute.
  6. Add in your tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, maple syrup, salt and pepper, and cooked turkey and mix well.
  7. Reduce the heat to a simmer and stir occasionally for 15-20 minutes or until it has thickened.

  9. Sprinkle with your fresh chopped parsley if you desire. Enjoy!
